EarBuds
All students have been asked to bring earbuds or headphones into school that can be left in school for daily use on the computers. We use the laptops in our class daily and they have the opportunity to listen on websites. Many students have already brought them in. I will stick a piece of tape with their name onto the cord to help identify. These will also be used for our SmarterBalanced testing.

Realistic Fiction Writing:
Students have been working hard to create a realistic fiction story. They have put a lot effort into transitions, elaboration and a mix of general and specific details with dialogue. After I review each, they will start to type for publication. Some students may need to do some at home so if you can purchase a flashdrive, it will help to type at school and at home. Thanks!

Partial Quotient is our next unit in math. I've posted an example. Although most of you will wonder why we teach this way, I thought the same when I first started teaching it. After teaching it, I see the benefits. But like all other concepts, we offer strategies to learning. This is breakdown for the students to understand the Base 10 system. Please watch the YouTube video that is linked below and try some with your child this weekend. This will give them a foundation before I teach this to them on Tuesday. Thanks!

Welcome to Mrs. Raposa's class Blog
Hi and welcome to the 2013-14 school year. I am Mrs. Raposa. This is my 5th year teaching 4th grade. I have two children. Nate is starting high school and Reese is starting 5th grade. I have a dog named Nico, a 20 year old cat named Dorian and a bunny named Gordon. I look forward to a great year with you and trying some new and exciting technology such as this blog. I am currently getting my Master's Degree in Educational Technology at CCSU. Feel free to post a message or questions to me.
School has begun! Let's make this a successful year. How to do that? Do your best, complete your homework including reading, respect yourself and one another. You are 4th graders now so be ready to take on the responsibilities. I know you can do it!
What to Buy?
Dry erase markers and some form of eraser like an old sock, homework folder, and a pencil box or bag. You may also want extra erasers, and a pencil sharpener. I will supply you everything else. Let me know if you need help finding these things.
Reading Workshop
In 4th grade, you are required to read 20 minutes a night to become a better reader. I do not assign weekend reading so that's up to you! I am here to help you become a better reader and find a lot of meaning in books but I need your help...you HAVE to read every night! “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! “If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” ― Stephen King |
Writers' Workshop
As a 4th grader, you should be able to write at least 2 pages to 3 pages in 45 minutes. But as a free writer, you should write even more. Use your toolkit every day to help you to become a better writer. “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” ― Maya Angelou |
